Bridge #301 - A First for Hamilton County
Noblesville, Indiana – The Hamilton County Highway Department is excited to announce the replacement of Small Structure #31008 (Bridge #301) is complete. This marks Hamilton County’s first Geo-Synthetic Reinforced Soil - Integrated Bridge System (GRS-IBS). GRS-IBS is a form of accelerated bridge construction that has been adopted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This innovative project was chosen for its ease and speed of construction while having a relatively low cost compared to conventional bridge foundation construction. While GRS-IBS structures have been built in other States, Indiana is in the process of embracing it.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has provided valuable technical assistance for this endeavor. In addition, the FHWA held a design-construction workshop for the Hamilton County Highway Department and others in the local transportation industry. The Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) at Purdue University will showcase the construction of the second Hamilton County’s GRS-IBS structure in spring 2016.
The Hamilton County Highway Department is planning two additional GRS-IBS structures for 2016 construction and have more in design. These projects are a testament to Hamilton County’s continued commitment to adopting and implementing innovative projects. Hamilton County would like to recognize the following partners, who made this a very successful project:
Hamilton County has 9 townships with approximately 600 miles of roadway and rights-of-way, 300 bridges, and over 600 small structures to maintain. The Hamilton County Highway Department strives for safe, accessible and efficient roadways, and continues to work to improve the transportation infrastructure for the citizens of Hamilton County.
