Laws and Ordinances

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office encourages all residents to know the laws and ordinances by which they are expected to abide.  An online searchable index of Indiana laws is found at http://iga.in.gov/legislative/laws/2017/ic/titles/001.  Local ordinances applying to Hamilton County residents living in unincorporated areas of the county can be accessed at https://library.municode.com/in/hamilton_county/codes/code_of_ordinances. Residents living in cities and towns must follow ordinances established by local governing bodies.

As taught in basic Government and Civics classes, the Sheriff's Office as part of law enforcement falls under the executive branch of government.  The legislative branch forms and enacts laws and ordinances while the executive branch enforces those statutes. Residents with questions about the application of laws and ordinances should contact Hamilton County Public Safety Communications at 317-773-1282 and request to speak to an officer from the appropriate agency.
