The Nature Academy

Sunday, March 19, 2023

The Nature Academy is a program geared to teens and adults looking for an immersive experience in nature education, inspiration, and storytelling. Each meeting will be geared toward topics meant to provide a deeper, more meaningful connection with nature and provide ideas on how we can individually and through group practices be better stewards to our parks, local habitats, and ecosystem more broadly. Each program may include a variety of activities from nature hikes, lectures, or special guest presentations. Group participation will be encouraged.

Ages: Teens and adults
Cost: Free
Location: CCNC
Pre-registration: Required. Register online

March 19 @ 1:30 PM - What was your Nature "Spark"?

We will talk about what the Nature “Spark” is how it shaped our love of learning about the world around us. Guest speakers will join us to share their personal spark stories and participants will be encouraged to share theirs if they are interested. We will end the
program with a brief hike outside.

April 23 @ 1:30 PM - Learning the Language of Nature

Jimmy Carter once said, “Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or social boundaries.” This Academy meeting will focus on the language of nature and how it connects us as well as how we translate this lost language. We will explore a brief program about nature’s language, and then head outside for a hike where we start to learn about our world through the sounds nature creates.

June 11 @ 1:30 PM - Home Habitat

The Academy will be exploring the topic of home landscapes with ecologically critical, native plants. A brief presentation will talk about the importance of native plants and include photos of yards that have used native plants effectively, both in a food web and as aesthetically accepted landscape plants. Participants are encouraged to bring photos or share their experiences with natives to the crowd as well. We will explore the plants for sale at the nature center and go out on a hike looking for native plants growing in their natural habitat.
