Dental Evidence of Diet in Pre-Colonial Indiana

Saturday, September 9, 2023

The Taylor Center of Natural History is pleased to welcome author of “Long 'On' the Tooth: Dental Evidence of Diet,” Dr. Christopher W. Schmidt, Professor & Chair of Anthropology and Director of the Bioarchaeology Laboratory at the University of Indianapolis for this enlightening presentation. The people of Indiana prior to colonization had a deeply engaged approach to their food attainment strategies. Evidence points to intentional modifications of natural surroundings to favor the collection of preferred foods as early as 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. Not long thereafter, peoples of the eastern woodlands joined a unique group in the history of humanity who independently domesticated plants. Around 1,000 years ago, maize entered the state, and joined the wide array of foods people enjoyed. In this talk, Dr. Schmidt discusses dental evidence for these dietary shifts and the subtle but important differences between the diets of men and women. Overall, innovative subsistence practices and dietary habits helped people overcome the challenges of foraging and farming.

–This presentation discusses the study of human remains, but it does not include skeletal images.
–This presentation does not seek to exploit, appropriate, or patronize indigenous peoples. Its aim is to provide a certain perspective on history, and it recognizes that it does not replace indigenous historical accounts, oral traditions, or any other means by which indigenous peoples explore and share their histories.
