The Nature Academy

The Nature Academy is a program geared to teens and adults looking for an immersive experience in nature education, inspiration, and storytelling. Each meeting will be geared toward topics meant to provide a deeper, more meaningful connection with nature and provide ideas on how we can individually and through group practices be better stewards of our parks, local habitats, and ecosystem more broadly. Each program may include a variety of activities from nature hikes, lectures, or special guest presentations. Group participation will be encouraged.

Owls of Indiana
Mark Booth with Take Flight Wildlife Education will bring a few owls native to Indiana and discuss their lifecycles, adaptations, and impacts on their conservation that impact their well-being.

Don’t be a Bonehead: Know your Animal Skulls
Zoologist and park employee Jackie Curt will show us her collection of animal skulls and discuss how to use clues from the skull to identify its original owner. She will share how she finds the skulls and the steps involved in their preservation.

Indiana Limestone... from Ocean to Skyscraper
Todd Schnatzmeyer AIA (Architect) and Josh Hill IMN (Indiana Master Naturalist) team up to deliver the story of Indiana geology and how Indiana limestone became known as the “Nation’s Building Stone.”.

Introduction to Astronomy
Astronomy enthusiast Dr. Doug Balogh will introduce us to the cosmos. He will also describe the capabilities of the powerful equipment he brought and give tips on how you can make the most of the telescope you have stashed in your closet. If clear skies prevail, we will have a chance to view the night sky.
